Fire Captain Vince “Vinny” Thomas is today’s #fridayfirefighter .

Captain Thomas is a 31 year veteran of the fire service. He began his firefighting career as a seasonal firefighter with the United States Forest Service and served as an auxiliary firefighter for Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District. His career fire service includes time with the Nevada Department of Forestry, Sierra Fire Protection District, and eventually back to the Truckee Meadows Fire.

From fighting fires at Yellowstone National Park to training firefighters in the central Asian nation of Turkmenistan, Captain Thomas has had a colorful and productive career.
True to the firefighting and fire prevention spirit, Vince raises goats to help reduce the wildland fuels. At one time, he had as many as 100 goats herding and feeding on northern Nevada fields. Today, that number is about 25. Nonetheless, the goats are rented by residents who have a need to reduce cheatgrass and other vegetation in an effort to create defensible space and improve fire safety efforts.

Vince has served on a variety of specialized teams throughout his career to include confined space rescue. The best part of the job is “serving the public,” says Vince. “I have had a joyous career, and would not have changed a thing,” he says. He has always been civic-minded and involved with the community he serves. He has empathy toward survivors of fires, particularly since he lost his own home and pets when a fire destroyed his home in 2003.
Vince and his wife Dianna have two college-age children. He is steadily making plans on his post-retirement life come January 2020 to include some traveling. Thank you, Captain Thomas, for your remarkable service to the people of @washoecountynv #firefighter #firecaptain #fireservice #tmfpdproud #fireandrescue

Firefighter/Paramedic Tony Schiro is today’s #FridayFirefighter.
Tony began his fire service career as an auxiliary firefighter for Truckee Meadows Fire in 2015. Serving in the auxiliary unit gave Tony the experience he needed to get his foot in the door, and also reaffirmed his desire to land a career position with Truckee Meadows Fire. “Truckee Meadows is my home,” he says. Tony also serves as a paramedic with Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority - REMSA, when he is not at the fire station.
A Reno, Nevada native, Tony grew up with friends who had fathers in the fire service which helped inspire him to consider his current career. Tony earned an Associates Degree in Fire Science from Truckee Meadows Community College. His current focus is to continue advancing his firefighting knowledge by attending classes and hands-on trainings across the country, and land a spot on the Fire District’s Hazardous Materials or HAZMAT Team. HAZMAT consists of experts who specialize in detecting, containing, and removing any release or potential release of hazardous substances.
Firefighter Schiro particularly enjoys the public education events, interacting and sharing with the younger generation what firefighters do, which is more than just “spraying water,” he says. “Serving in one of the few advanced life support and fire agencies in northern Nevada offers a dynamic challenge that is different every day,” says Tony. “I love the comradery of the Truckee Meadows Fire Family,” he says.
Tony is active in outdoor activities. He is a self-proclaimed gear head and enjoys taking things apart, and putting them back together. He was recently engaged to his girlfriend Anna. They plan a September 2020 wedding. We are very happy that Tony is a part of the #TMFPD family, and appreciate his dedication and service to Washoe County, Nevada. #tmfpdproud #firefighter #paramedic #firefightersstrong #nevada
