On a recent podcast i ventured into questioning the responsibilities we have as outdoor photographers from an environmental and climate change perspective. The problems are undeniable but like so many things, the more I learn the less I feel I understand. This is particularly true when it comes to the unintended consequences of well intentioned actions.
▫️
A big concern for me is the pushing of personal responsibility from people in positions of influence. Throughout history it has proven to be a dangerous position as governments jump on the bandwagon, promote the same agenda, and in the process alleviate themselves from the requirement to act. There are lots of things we don’t need the government to do for us but leading climate change is not one of them. It requires a global response, heavy investment in science and a keen focus to get things done quickly. Planting more trees seems like an exceptionally sensible idea too.
▫️
It’s almost impossible to promote personal action around climate change without being hypercritical. I am trying to do my part personally but who am i to tell anyone how to behave. It never worked as a cop and it won’t work now. My only goal is to convince some people to get interested in photography and nature with the hope it inspires a few people to explore the issues themselves.
▫️
One thing I am keen to do is continue to shoot locally and explore every single photographic opportunity within a few hours of my house. This image was taken in a newly discovered location about an hour away and will be the focus of many future visits, in all weather conditions and in all seasons.

Danish architecture studio @dorte_mandrup together with Marianne Levinsen Landskab and the consultants JAC Studios, Thornton Tomasetti, Nils Øien and An-ders Kold have been announced as the winner of the international design competition to design a new attraction on the island of Andøya in Northern Norway. This is one of the best places in the world for whale watching, and the new building, #TheWhale, will tell the tale of this fabled creature through art, science and architecture. / © MIR

A drizzly last look at the thatched cottage where we were staying, folded prettily into the Marlborough downs, before swinging onto the road to London trailing the tinny jingle of Baby Shark.

For everyone who has asked about the house: it's called Faerie Door Cottage and we rented it from @uniquehomestays. It was charming and characterful rather than slick, but that's what we were after, and I would warmly recommend it.

Swipe Left: Venus, Mercury, and the Zodiacal Light. This was taken just before dawn on the Great Barrier Island, New Zealand. The island is a Dark Sky Sanctuary, and amazingly dark. Since the planets Venus and Mercury are closer to the sun than earth, you are looking sunward to see then. As a result the best dark times to see them are just before dawn or just after sunset. This was just before dawn. What caught my attention was how well the Zodiacal light showed up at this time. When seen just before dawn it’s called the “False Dawn”. It’s a faint diffuse roughly triangular light or glow that appears to extend from the sun along the zodiac, straddling the ecliptic. It is caused by sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust in the plane of the solor system. (Wikipedia) I thought it showed up nicely here. Check out the labeled image as well. This is a stack of 5 images stacked in SLS, 23 mm, 15 sec., f/2.8, ISO 12,800. Many thanks to Carol @darkskysanctuary for guiding me there and drawing my attention to to planets that night. Carol, you are a great guide! Cheers, Wayne

ANNOUNCEMENT: NEW PHOTO WORKSHOP!! KENYA 2020.
If you have been following my recent adventures, you know that I spent last summer road tripping across South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. Two months of great joy, mainly focusing on spending as much time as I could with the wildlife. A trip of a lifetime that truly changed my life and vision of photography.
This is why, my good friend + professional wildlife photographer @georgetheexplorer and I have teamed up to offer a super exclusive 6-day adventure next March in George’s favorite place in Kenya: the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, a private reserve in the Maasai Mara.
We’ll stay in an @asiliaafrica luxury bush camp, and we’ll go out every day on multiple safari in private vehicles with no more than 3 guests in it.
The workshop is actually almost sold out already, there are just 2 spots left. We’re offering an early bird price of 4,200€ (instead of 4,700€) until November 15.

This workshop WILL sell out, so if you’re interested to join us and learn all we know about photography and how to bring back home those incredible wildlife images, just have a look at my website - link in bio / swipe up in the stories - and apply fast.
Tl;dr:
• March 16-21, 2020
• 6-day safari photo workshop in Kenya’s Maasai Mara • Up to 6 participants, 3 max per vehicle
• Asilia Africa’s Encounter Mara luxury bush camp
• Everything is included in the price, minus international flights, visa, insurance and gratuities.

A couple of portraits of Google’s Chief Innovation Evangelist, Dr. Frederik Pferdt. I photographed Frederik in San Francisco a number of years ago for one of my first professional assignments, and still collaborate with many people in the tech industry that I met through that story. Nice to reconnect in New York recently after so many years ✌️

I firmly believe in the power of relentless optimism and collective action! That’s why I’m starting this. @akunaoceans

Akuna is established in a belief in better. For the future of our oceans. For disrupting the cycle of plastic pollution. For greater corporate social responsibility. For balanced policy affirming accountability. For future generations. For the prolonged health of the environments we play in!
We are continuously challenging ourselves to act more responsibly and inspire others to do the same! #akunaoceans
