Chalking out full scale plan drawing on the paving behind the workshop for a smallish kiln to be built on Bruny Island during a summer workshop for @johnwardlearchitects . It takes me back to working on surfboard templates with @surfboardresto in the 70’s.

Finishing off a run of small pourers in 2 different sizes - this double gauge tombo means I can easily check the internal dimensions as I go.

Slight variation in size and clay on these disc bowls from the gas firing last week. They are headed to Melbourne for @restaurantgaea this afternoon.

After finishing a gas firing this afternoon and then having a nap I was searching the internet for something entirely different when I came across this pot sold on a Japanese auction site.
The helpful description is “six old kiln flat cheap era old Tokoname one-side large flat pot “ - apparently about 31 cm diameter. I love it!

This is a reminder of why we try to avoid shipping our pots with @auspost rather than the specialised carrier we normally use. However for smaller orders it’s more economic for the customer - false economy in this case.
They can ship cartons of wine to us without breakage but taking care of well-packed pots just doesn’t seem to be in their remit.

It starts with an idea translated through these sticks on the ground to start the process of bringing a modern version of an ancient kiln type into being. To use it to convey materials and making through the transforming medium of fire for architects in this amazing setting is going to be a special project.

Just a detail shot of a covered butter dish showing how I set up areas to have clean and easy definition for where the glazed area meets the raw clay- extra important where there is a strong contrast between the glaze colour and the fired clay colour.

For those of you who enquired about the flue set up in the kiln design I posted yesterday - it would be like this flue system in my current smaller kiln where the flame is drawn back under the shelf.

It’s been a real Spring day with fluffy white clouds perched on Kunanyi and sudden squalls scudding across the bay at Lauderdale beneath heavy clouds.

Playing around with ideas for a small crossdraught anagama type kiln for a friend.
It always seems to involve white out, a French curve and coloured pencils at this concept stage.

Many of the pots I make are formed by 2 distinct strands of influence, place and the rich diverse history of craft making.
This prototype basin bowls has a nod towards the basins of English and French country pots. It will be just glazed inside with the downwards rolled rim providing a separating frame for the interior surface.
