If America is the world’s leading democracy, why doesn’t it act like one? And why does it make it so difficult for some of its citizens to vote? As Barack Obama said last year: “We’re the only advanced democracy that deliberately discourages people from voting.” Few people outside America – and many who live here – are aware of how US states explicitly suppress the votes of people of color, students and poorer communities. That's why we're launching a year-long series The Fight to Vote. It will draw national and international attention to voter suppression, and will put voting rights at the very heart of the Guardian’s 2020 election coverage. After all, what’s the point of covering an election if so many people are prevented from participating in it? Strict voter ID laws, poll closures and voter purges are all techniques used by states to deter, discourage or deny certain communities from casting their vote. And these are states with a terrible history of voting

The distance, having now been measured by GAIA, is 655±13 light-years. It is similar in appearance to the Cat's Eye Nebula and the Ring Nebula, whose size, age, and physical characteristics are similar to the Dumbbell Nebula, varying only in its relative proximity and the appearance from the equatorial viewing angle. The Helix Nebula has sometimes been referred to as the "Eye of God" in pop culture, as well as the "Eye of Sauron". 🔭 Do you love Helix Nebula ❤ Are you ready to explore Space 🔭 @theourspace

Visualize the Entire World’s Wealth Inequality ⚖️ - Europe ⠀ .⠀ Wealth inequality shows up in a variety of different ways. The best way to compare levels of wealth around the world is by looking at median figures. A median number simply indicates that 50% of all people have more than that much money, and 50% have less. ⠀ .⠀ Top 3 Countries in Europe by Median Wealth per Adult⠀ 1. Switzerland: $227.9K⠀ 2. Iceland: $166K⠀ 3. Luxembourg: $139.8K⠀ .⠀ Western European countries are clearly very wealthy, led by the Swiss. It’s an open question to what extent Swiss banking is responsible for increasing that country’s overall median wealth figures. Nevertheless, the contrast between West and East is stark. Ukraine, for example, only has $1.2K per adult, on par with many countries in Africa.⠀ .⠀ Where do you think the best place to live in Europe is? Just adorable! #mrrogers #Repost @goodnews movement with @get repost ・・・ For #worldkindnessday many Pittsburghers wore red cardigans to honor the legacy of Pittsburgh-native Mr. Rogers. This extended to local hospitals including newborns at UPMC Magee-Women’s Hospital, who wore handmade red cardigans and Mister Rogers-inspired knitted booties too. Fred Rogers’ wife Joanne paid a visit and was delighted to see these cardigan-clad cuties. 🍼🥰 ( @tomhanks check it out!) #worldkindnessday #hollywood #hollywoodlife #hollywooddreams #celebrities #celebrity #celebs #entertainmentnews
Does this photo remind you of James Cameron’s film Avatar? Recognised as the tallest and heaviest lift in the world, China’s Bailong Elevator was the inspiration for the floating Hallelujah Mountains in Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi flick. This impressive lift, though, isn’t on Pandora. ☁️ Instead, the 326m-high structure is situated in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in China’s Hunan Province. ★ Bailong Elevator, which translates to “the Hundred Dragons Elevator,” was built into a carefully selected quartz sandstone cliff face. 🐉 Construction was controversial – the park is a Unesco World Heritage Site and protected under law. Proponents of construction argue that the massive steel structure actually decreases tourist impact on the area, as it reduces the time tourists have to spend in the park getting to sights from hours to about a minute and a half. ★ 📷 @world walkerz via @booksmartertravel ★ #china #zhangjiajienationalforestpark #unescoworldheritage

If Halloween didn't scare you a week ago, this might. October 2019 was 0.69°C hotter than the average for the period between 1981-2010, making it almost certainly the hottest October ever, according to data from the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service. - A hot October follows on from September, which was the hottest September ever, and June... which was the hottest June ever. - This chart plots the temperature for every month of October since 1979, and the trend is, unfortunately, undeniable. - This chart was in our newsletter from Friday. There were 2 other charts and lots of data snacks in it too. Want to never miss a chart? Hit the link in our bio to sign up. It’s absolutely free, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Lee Lee When I was nine years old, I spent many hours in my parents’ basement drawing portraits of a dog and a pirate, trying to win a scholarship to a correspondence art school that advertised in the Sunday newspaper. ‘Draw Winky’ was a heavily promoted challenge. The creature was sort of an innocent, sweet-looking, and deer-like character with a skinny neck, flop of hair, tiny button nose and large pointed ears. I was sure that if I could just draw Winky or the dog or even the pirate well enough, I was bound to be famous like Mr. Charles Schulz, the cartoonist of Charlie Brown and Peanuts fame. Schulz himself was an alumnus of the school. Apparently, nobody liked my Winky. The call never came. No congratulatory letter arrived. I’m pretty sure my well-meaning mother, fearful of what fame and fortune would do to a child prodigy like me, never actually mailed my entries. I put my colored pencils down and turned to photography.
In 1975, Michael McQuilken (right), his little brother Sean (left) and his sister Mary (swipe left) were climbing Moro Rock in California's Sequoia National Park when they decided to take a photo because their hair started standing wildly. “We were from San Diego and really stupid,” says Michael, who was 18-years-old at the time. His brother Sean was 12. “We thought it was something funny. I never was cautious before that. Now, if I’m out to climb a peak, I’m the first person to bail if clouds gather. At the time, we thought this was humorous. I took a photo of Mary and Mary took a photo of Sean and me. I raised my right hand into the air and the ring I had on began to buzz so loudly that everyone could hear it." As they made their way back down, the temperature suddenly dropped and it began to hail. Partway down the mountain, they were struck by lightning. “I found myself on the ground with the others. Sean was collapsed and huddled on his
