FAU Juiz de Fora

The intermediate floor, houses the classrooms, laboratories, research areas, teacher’s offices, as well as technical support and logistics. These programs serve to connect and mediate the ground floor activities to the programs in the upper floor.

The faculty offices are allocated in the west and the north, interconnected by internal corridors, and equipped with lightweight partitions that allow for privacy and flexibility in the interior layout. The sustainability laboratory (ECOS), the manual drafting classes (LER/GRAF-MN) and the classrooms are placed towards the south facade, occupying a space that is easily accessible for both students and teachers. The research and extension offices face the atrium at the main entrance and are open, allowing the surrounding area to function as an access point as well as a platform to work, socialize, meet, rest, and collaborate.

The project was developed in partnership with @firma_arq and brancomeioamarelo.

No pavimento intermediário, introduzimos os programas relacionados ao ensino acadêmico como as salas de aula, os laboratórios e núcleos voltados à pesquisa e extensão, os gabinetes de professores e as áreas de apoio e logística. Esses ambientes realizam a dupla função de conexão entre as atividades do pavimento térreo e as do pavimento superior, de maior uso dos alunos.

Os gabinetes foram alocados nas porções oeste e norte, conectados entre si por corredor interno, e guarnecidos com divisórias leves que permitem, ao mesmo tempo, uma maior privacidade e flexibilidade para o layout interno. Já na fachada sul foram colocados o laboratório ECOS, o LER/GRAF-MN e as salas de aula, ocupando um espaço de fácil acesso tanto de alunos como professores. Os núcleos de pesquisa e extensão estão voltadas para o átrio de acolhimento do acesso principal e se abrem para corredores largos que podem ser usados como locais de trabalho, convívio, encontro, troca de ideias, descanso e contemplação.

On May 2018, the Federal University of Juiz de Fora launched a competition for the new building of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU-UFJF) in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

The ground floor houses the auditorium, the cafeteria, the academic center and the printing and stationery shops, all of which are collective programs that invite students and faculty to engage with one another. Facing west, next to the square at the main entrance overlooking the campus, a double-heighted atrium is located for larger collective activities, such as exhibitions, informal lectures, protests, and a diverse range of performances.

Reinforcing this collective character, a stepped seating platform simultaneously serves as a generous access to the upper floors, a seating area, and the roof to the academic center. This provides a more organic vertical circulation as well as a space to encounter other students.

A acomodação dos setores do programa foi feita a partir do térreo, onde foram dispostos os programas associados ao chamado setor de convivência, como o auditório, a cantina, o centro acadêmico e os serviços de reprografia/papelaria. Também no térreo, junto à praça de chegada, imaginamos um átrio de acolhimento com pé-direito duplo que além de oferecer uma amplitude ao acesso principal, é um ambiente ideal para a realização de atividades de maior participação pública, como debates, palestras e outras apresentações.

Reforçando esse caráter, propomos a construção de uma arquibancada que se apresenta tanto como abrigo ao centro acadêmico, como acesso generoso aos andares superiores. Desse modo, buscamos fazer com que a circulação vertical se configure mais do que como uma demanda de fluxo, mas como um percurso, ideia evidenciada desde a chegada à praça de chegada do edifício, onde se inicia a experiência de fruição, de contemplação e encontro.

Estamos muito felizes que o @archdailybr publicou o projeto do concurso que vencemos para a execução da nova sede da Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (FAU-UFJF). Aqui compartilhamos imagens da maquete impressa no escritório em ácido polilático (PLA) para a 1a fase do concurso. Posteriormente, ao desenvolvermos o Projeto Básico, uma série de revisões foram realizadas para atender os comentários trazidos pela Faculdade. Por isso, podemos observer diferenças entre esta maquete e o projeto final, como a orientação dos brises, a disposição das salas de aula e aberturas mais generosas entre pavimentos.

We’re very grateful and humbled to be one of the recipients of Columbia University’s GSAPP Incubator Prize 2019-2020!

The support from @columbiagsapp is essential to advancing our work as a young practice.

Our project titled “Crop Wild Relatives in the Fertile Crescent” addresses this year’s GSAPP Incubator Prize theme “Climate Change at the Building Scale”. Since the Third Agricultural Revolution in the 1960s, the biodiversity of the Fertile Crescent has been under threat. We are currently researching the works carried out by local scientists and organizations to understand the different variables and frame a scope of work that is scientific and humanitarian. Parallel to the research we will develop an architectural project in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon.

Como parte do tema do prêmio deste ano “Climate Change at the Building Scale”, nosso projeto é intitulado “Crop Wild Relatives in the Fertile Crescent”. Desde a década de 1960, a biodiversidade do Crescente Fértil está ameaçada. Atualmente, estamos pesquisando o trabalho realizado por cientistas e organizações locais para embasar o escopo de trabalho de maneira científica e humanitária. Em paralelo a esta pesquisa, estamos desenvolvendo um projeto arquitetônico no Vale do Becaa, no Líbano.

Taquaral Pavilion (2016)

Taquaral Pavilion was designed to provide an independent structure for COMDEMA, the Municipal Council of the Environment of Campinas. Located in the public park of Taquaral, the pavilion aims to provide an infrastructural system that allows for the co-existence of diverse ecologies within and around the building.

The polished reflective steel canopy utilizes the mirroring of surrounding greenery and interior programs to visually merge the built with the natural environment. It simultaneously offers a holistic view of the entire system at once. From a single vantage point one manages to have a planar, perspectival and panoramic view.

The Taquaral Pavilion addresses the possibility of tackling environmental, economic, and social parameters through accumulated design and construction expertise.

O Pavilhão Taquaral foi projetado para prover um edifício independente para o COMDEMA, o Conselho Municipal de Meio Ambiente de Campinas. Localizado no Parque Taquaral, o pavilhão tem como objetivo fornecer um sistema de infraestrutura que permita a coexistência de diversas ecologias dentro e ao redor do edifício.

O forro espelhado mescla o ambiente construído e o entorno natural, oferecendo simultaneamente uma visão de todo o sistema de uma só vez. De um único ponto de vista, consegue-se ter uma visão em planta, perspectiva e panorâmica do conjunto.

Nossa proposta estuda a implantação do edifício e seu papel na escala da cidade como catalisador para o tecido urbano em geral. O paisagismo respeita os animais e espécies nativas através de sistemas expostos que utilizam espécies vegetais no processo da filtragem das águas e gestão dos resíduos.

In 2015, changes in the municipal budget laws allowed for COMDEMA (Municipal Council of the Environment) to have an independent physical structure for a fully functioning council. The members of COMDEMA required a physical space for collective discussions in open meetings that occur monthly along with private meeting areas and offices for more in-depth technical studies and analysis on environmental issues and public policies.

The relationship between the environment and the programmatic distribution is based on sustainable solutions and the notion of public, collective, and private spaces. The restricted and controlled accessed areas are concentrated in a transparent and dense volume, allowing for a seamless circulation in between the programs and eliminating the need for vertical circulation. This transparent prism, while exposed, is entirely shaded from direct sunlight through the extended roof that canopies over the more public programs, including the reception area, café, exhibition space, meeting hall, and the bike stands. This project explores technologically innovative and traditional sustainable solutions while incorporating the required program through a gradation of public to private spaces.

Plant Species

Looking at the park’s prolific resources that include 157 native and exotic plants species and recognizing this multiplicity as an opportunity, the aim of the Taquaral Pavilion is to provide an infrastructural system that allows the co-existence of diverse ecologies within and around the designed building.

Seen here are the plant species used as part of the filtration system and the green roof structure. The green roof is composed of a massive planted slab, a suspended forest that showcase the exuberant nature native to Brazil. 
The filtration system acts as a living machine: a series of tanks filled with live plants, trees, algae, microorganisms and bacteria filter the waste. The process takes about four days to turn the sewage into crystalline water. It is chemical-free, odor-free and compared to conventional waste treatment is financially and ecologically efficient.

Taquaral Pavilion addresses the possibility of tackling environmental, economic, and social parameters through accumulated design and construction expertise.

Inventário de plantas

Reconhecendo a enorme diversidade natural do Parque Taquaral que tem 157 espécies de plantas nativas e exóticas catalogadas, o partido paisagístico do projeto procurou fornecer um sistema de infraestrutural que potencializasse a coexistência de diversas ecologias dentro e ao redor do pavilhão.

São vistas aqui as espécies de plantas usadas como parte do sistema de filtragem e do teto verde. O teto verde é composto por uma uma floresta suspensa que revela a natureza nativa do Brasil.

O sistema de filtragem atua como uma máquina viva: uma série de tanques fazem uso de plantas aquáticas, gramíneas, algas, bactérias e diversos microorganismos que filtram os resíduos. O processo leva cerca de quatro dias para completar a filtragem. É livre de produtos químicos, livre de odores e comparado ao tratamento de resíduos convencional é financeiramente e ecologicamente eficiente.

The relationship between the environment and the programmatic distribution is based on sustainable solutions and the notion of public, collective, and private spaces. The restricted and controlled accessed areas are concentrated in a transparent and dense volume, allowing for a seamless circulation in between the programs and eliminating the need for vertical circulation. This transparent prism, while exposed, is entirely shaded from direct sunlight through the extended roof that canopies over the more public programs, including the reception area, café, exhibition space, meeting hall, and the bike stands. This project explores technologically innovative and traditional sustainable solutions while incorporating the required program through a gradation of public to private spaces.

Em 2015, mudanças nas leis orçamentárias municipais permitiram ao COMDEMA construir uma estrutura física independente para seu funcionamento. Foi requisitado um espaço para discussões coletivas em assembléias abertas mensais, salas de reuniões privadas e gabinetes para estudos e análises técnicas.

A distribuição programática foi baseada em soluções sustentáveis e na gradação de espaços públicos, coletivos e privados. As áreas restritas e controladas são concentradas em um volume transparente e denso, permitindo uma circulação direta entre os programas e eliminando a necessidade de circulação vertical. The polished reflective steel canopy utilizes the mirroring of surrounding greenery and interior programs to visually merge the built with the natural environment. It simultaneously offers a holistic view of the entire system at once. From a single vantage point one manages to have a planar, perspectival and panoramic view.

The Taquaral Pavilion addresses the possibility of tackling environmental, economic, and social parameters through accumulated design and construction expertise.

O Pavilhão Taquaral foi projetado para prover um edifício independente para o COMDEMA, o Conselho Municipal de Meio Ambiente de Campinas. Localizado no Parque Taquaral, o pavilhão tem como objetivo fornecer um sistema de infraestrutura que permita a coexistência de diversas ecologias dentro e ao redor do edifício.

O forro espelhado mescla o ambiente construído e o entorno natural, oferecendo simultaneamente uma visão de todo o sistema de uma só vez. De um único ponto de vista, consegue-se ter uma visão em planta, perspectiva e panorâmica do conjunto.

Nossa proposta estuda a implantação do edifício e seu papel na escala da cidade como catalisador para o tecido urbano em geral. O paisagismo respeita os animais e espécies nativas através de sistemas expostos que utilizam espécies vegetais no processo da filtragem das águas e gestão dos resíduos.

Urban Context

Taquaral Pavilion was designed to provide an independent structure for COMDEMA, the Municipal Council of the Environment of Campinas. Located in the public park of Taquaral, the pavilion aims to provide an infrastructural system that allows for the co-existence of diverse ecologies within and around the building. 
Our proposal studies the implications of the building within the site, including its role within the city as an asset to the urban fabric. The landscaping aims to respect diverse forest species, native animals and local inhabitants’ activities. This is achieved through its subtle implantation within the grounds of the park, down to the exposed mechanical systems that utilize natural plant species in the process of water and waste management. Thus, from a macro to a micro scale the design tends to both the natural systems and the building systems. 
The Taquaral Pavilion addresses the possibility of tackling environmental, economic, and social parameters through accumulated design and construction expertise.

As Unidades Habitacionais Coletivas Sol Nascente em Ceilândia foram desenvolvidas para o concurso nacional promovido pela CODHAB DF em 2016.

O projeto parte da premissa de que o conjunto de 14 edifícios deve atuar como agente catalizador fundamental à construção do espaço urbano ainda precário da região. Tirando proveito da oportunidade de ir além do desenho de um único lote de forma isolada, o projeto busca a partir da implantação de seus edifícios e da distribuição de seus espaços livres, reverberar e conformar o desenho de toda a quadra e em última instância da cidade que nasce e se transforma.

Desta forma, a escolha do partido procurou convergir e equilibrar as diversas escalas de projeto sem uma hierarquia pré-concebida, abrangendo as questões construtivas das edificações e os parâmetros de qualidade urbana de igual para igual.

Catavento School

Catavento School is an extension to house additional programs for a pre-school, including a music room, an arts and crafts room, and a reading room. In response to the limited space and time for the construction, it was decided to locate the school on a residual plot in between the existing buildings.

Fast and rational construction methods were chosen, including light steel-frame structure, translucent polycarbonate sheets, and colorful acoustic panels that define three programs: yellow for music room; green for arts and crafts; and orange for the reading room. The choices in construction methods not only allowed for the completion of the construction within the brief period of school holidays, but were also a playful response to the program’s requirements.

The pavilion stands as a permeable structure, whose exterior doors slide during day-time revealing the children’s activities and whose polycarbonate sheets emanate light to the surroundings during the night.

O Pavilhão Catavento é uma extensão para uma pré-escola, projetada para adicionar salas de música, artes e leitura. Em resposta ao espaço e tempo limitados para a construção, o pavilhão foi implantado em um terreno entre dois edifícios existentes. 
Métodos de construção rápidos e racionais foram priorizados, como estrutura leve de de aço, chapas de policarbonato e painéis acústicos coloridos que definem os três programas: amarelo para sala de música; verde para artes e artesanato; e painéis laranja para a sala de leitura. As escolhas de métodos construtivos permitiram não só a conclusão dentro do período de férias, mas foram uma resposta lúdica aos requisitos do programa.

O pavilhão se destaca como uma estrutura permeável, cujas portas exteriores se abrem durante o dia revelando as atividades das crianças e cujas folhas de policarbonato translúcido emanam luz para os arredores durante a noite.
