Gonna be wrapping up our little tour of Providence over the next couple of posts, because believe it or not I’ll be going back next week! Anyways, I felt like I had to include this building at some point. This is the grand arched entrance of the Emery’s Majestic theatre, now the home of the Trinity Repertory Company. I can’t speak to the inside, but the exterior has to be one of the nicest theatres in New England. As a sidenote, “The Prince of Providence” refers to longtime mayor Buddy Cianci Jr., who had an almost Robert Moses-like influence on the cityscape of modern-day Providence. .

So I know this is turning into the world’s longest series, but Providence definitely punches above its weight in terms of cool architecture. This is another little gem, the 1906 Providence Journal building. Designed by Peabody & Stearns, the architects of Boston’s Custom House Tower, it definitely seems to take some inspiration from the grand summer homes of nearby Newport. As crazy as it seems, its gorgeous exterior was actually covered by plain white tile until recently!

On the corner between the two wings of the Lapham Building is what might be my absolute favorite building in Providence. The Tilden-Thurber Company building was built in 1895 by Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, whose major works include the Art Institute of Chicago and Boston South Station. It’s kind of hard to tell what style it’s supposed to be. It has a strong Chicago vibe to it, with big windows and a lot of “organic” plant-based decoration, but with a bunch of neoclassical/beaux-arts elements mixed in. I think it works in the building’s favor though, adding a lot of interesting elements to the facade. Of course I don’t feel like any of the shots I took do it justice!

Happy Halloween ghosts and ghouls! Here’s another beautiful early high-rise in Providence, the 1904 Lapham Building, a 9-story structure with warm yellow terra cotta detailing. I thought at first that it was a tall slender tower, but it’s actually a long L-shape that wraps around the building on the corner (which you’ll see in my next post) and fronts on the cross street with a near-identical facade. It looks to be undergoing a residential conversion at the moment.

This is the sidewalk clock of the Shepard Store, once a major local retailer in downtown Providence. Both the clock and the former store itself are still in use, though I have no idea if that cool little neon sign still lights up. I know the pic is slightly off center btw, I just couldn’t bring myself to crop out any of that beautiful facade on the left 😅

The Art Deco former Providence location of Kresge’s, which you may know better as Kmart (or not). At first I thought those yellow panels were plywood. Turns out they’re gold.

This fancy red boi is the Union Trust Building on Dorrance Street in downtown Providence, built in 1901. This is one of my favorites, it gives me a similar vibe to some buildings I’ve seen in NYC. (Also at this rate I think my Instagram is literally just gonna be pics from Providence for the rest of the year)

This is the view we had of the Industrial Bank (aka the Superman building) and its neighbors along Kennedy Plaza, including the iconic Biltmore sign. Fun fact, if you’ve seen Family Guy, this is the skyline you see in the distance behind the Griffins’ house. Also shoutout to that guy in the Camry who’s illegally parked on the sidewalk outside our hotel.

I recently spent some time in Providence and had a lot of fun just walking around the city and shooting the architecture. This is the Industrial Bank, an Art Deco landmark and still the tallest building in Rhode Island over 90 years after its completion. It’s also known for being one of the buildings that inspired the Daily Planet in Superman. It’s currently empty and its interiors are set to undergo a conversion from office space to apartments (though that’s apparently caught up in red tape at the moment). More pics from Providence to come!

In honor of the 152nd birthday of the legendary #FrankLloydWright , here are a few “lost” photos/re-edits of pics I took of his houses in the village of #OakPark on the western edge of #Chicago . Wright himself lived in Oak Park for the first 30 years of his long career and pretty much designed half the town 😂

In order, these are the Goodrich (1896), Thomas (1901), Heurtley (1902), Beachy (1906), Rollin Furbeck (1897) and Hills-DeCaro (1906) houses.

Exactly two years ago today (April 24, 2017), I visited the city of Chicago for the first time. It was such an inspiring experience to visit such a legendary city. Luckily I’ve been able to visit again since, but for the anniversary of that first trip, I’ve picked out a few cool shots from Chicago that I never got around to posting. I still have more I haven’t posted so leave a comment if you’d like me to share them!

Been sleeping on this one for a while but this is definitely kind of a wintry shot so I figure I should post it now. This is the Pirelli Building in New Haven, Connecticut (1969) by Marcel Breuer, or as we locals know it, the building on stilts aka the IKEA billboard.

I’m super happy with how the edits to this one came out, I think it really captures the feel of the deep blue winter sky against the warm brownish color of the concrete. Imagine the chilly sea breeze coming off Long Island Sound and you’ve pretty much got the Connecticut winter vibe.

Hey guys! Here’s a sketch of what I’m calling the Corner Tower Building (I know, how creative). It’s a fantasy mini-skyscraper meant for a corner site in a small city, with a streamlined Art Deco/Art Moderne limestone exterior inspired by many of the buildings constructed as part of New Deal programs in the 1930s.

Chicago #throwback part 3: for my last post of 2018, I thought I’d share a few #longexposure shots I took of a Chicago “L” train crossing the Wells Street Bridge over the Chicago River, as seen from the LaSalle Street Bridge. I really haven’t done much night photography this year, so I’m definitely hoping to practice it more in 2019. Happy New Year!

Chicago #throwback part 2: I hope everyone had a great Christmas! Here are just a few of the many structures designed by the legendary #FrankLloydWright in the village of Oak Park on the city’s western edge. It’s crazy to visit these places and find out that some of them are on the same street, or even right next to each other!
1. Frank Thomas House, 1901
2. Peter Beachy House, 1906
3. Nathan Moore House, 1895
4. Hills-DeCaro House, 1906
5. Arthur Heurtley House, 1902
6. Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio, 1889
7. Rollin Furbeck House, 1897
8. William Fricke House, 1901
9. Edwin Cheney House, 1903
10. Unity Temple, 1908
I tried to edit each pic in a way that fits the color scheme of the individual building. Let me know what you think!
