The main entrance to the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral is through the impressive Christ Church Gate, built in the early Tudor period between 1504 and 1521.
This shows the smaller of the two openings in the gate, the postern gate (the larger opening is just visible to the right).
The wooden door dates from 1660 and replaces an earlier door, which had been destroyed in 1643.

Another autumnal pic from Cologne-Marienburg. The tree exploding with colour partly obscures a house dating from 1925, designed by architect Jakob Dondorff for his own use.

The 12th-century octagonal Water Tower, on the north side of Canterbury Cathedral, was built under the direction of Prior Wibert in order that the monks could wash at the beginning of each day and before meals.
Water was fed in through lead pipes from a spring outside the city to a huge brass basin that once stood at the base of the tower.
The upper parts of the tower were built in the late 14th century.
An elaborate and colourful plan dating from around 1165, and kept at Trinity College Cambridge, shows the Water Tower and the waterworks for the cathedral.

Early one evening, after the crowds of tourists had gone home, we walked around the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral.
Here is the Infirmary Cloister.
Canterbury Cathedral is currently undergoing a multi-million pound renovation programme, scheduled to be completed by 2021 (swipe left to see what the cathedral looks like at the moment from the south-west).

St Augustine’s Abbey, Canterbury.
This is the base of Ethelbert’s Tower and part of the north wall of the nave beyond.
Following the dissolution and subsequent demolition of the abbey in the 16th century, a large part of Ethelbert’s Tower survived, but in 1822 half of what remained collapsed, leaving a precarious and unstable ruin nearly 100 feet high. It was too dangerous to leave standing and so was brought down by use of a battering ram.
(See previous posts for more information about the abbey.)

Looking out across the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, Canterbury.
Off to the left in the distance you can see the late 15th-century Bell Harry Tower of Canterbury Cathedral. The building on the right is a mid 19th-century library of the former St Augustine’s College, built on the site of the abbot’s hall and now part of the King’s School.
Over 1,400 years ago Pope Gregory the Great sent Augustine and a group of monks to convert the English to Christianity, starting with Æthelberht, King of Kent.
A monastery was founded just outside the city walls, and during the following centuries a large abbey church was built, which housed the tombs of early Anglo-Saxon kings and archbishops of Canterbury.
The Normans destroyed the abbey and, in the decades following the Conquest, replaced it with a vast abbey church that rivalled the nearby cathedral in size.
This building in turn was demolished on the orders of Henry VIII during the dissolution of the monasteries.

The entrance to St Augustine’s Abbey in Canterbury is marked by the imposing Great Gate, built between 1300 and 1309.
A second gate, the Cemetery Gate, is about 100m to the south, but of the abbey itself only ruins remain.
In the late middle ages the abbey, England’s oldest, was an impressive building, almost as large as Canterbury Cathedral a short distance to the west, but in 1538 it was dissolved and demolished.
