Since 2009, BE Architecture have produced a Christmas card for their clients, consultants and suppliers. While varying in themes from year to year the images usually have the same strong grid across their surface which refers to the art of British duo Gilbert and George. Today is a brief slide show of cards from the last 10 years including several special edition holograms. This years card is just being sent out now!

Today we are revisiting our first Kooyongkoot Road Residence in Hawthorn, which was designed on a small block for a couple looking to downsize from their family home. The house has a comprehensive program despite its compact size and offers the occupants privacy from the thoroughfare of the street. ⠀
The façade is made up of polished render and folded aluminium sheet, which has been finished in a matte stippled powder coat to give it the impression of oiled steel. This year the clients and their family will be enjoying their third Christmas in the home and taking advantage of the generous outdoor entertaining area.⠀

In our projects, we like to limit materials to their simplest expression where possible. For a project of ours on Hampden Road in Armadale, all of the walls of the powder room were clad in timber veneer panelling to create a warm, sumptuous feeling. The doors were made from the same veneer to create a complete timber cocoon broken only by the granite sink and the black steel vanity mirror. Although a seemingly simple idea, it’s always a pleasant surprise when entering the room. ⠀

The interior design for the Armadale Residence involved several pieces that were handmade especially for the project. The clients youthful personas and love of being challenged, led us to the development of our Kinetic Ring Light, featured here today. The light, which is reminiscent of a 1970's sculpture, is nearly five metres in diameter and made from a suspended stainless-steel tube fitted with LED lights, and surrounded by coloured Perspex disks.⠀
The disks were made to interlock with each other and arranged in a cluster around the frame. Over the years, we have made several large ring lights in different materials for our clients to create a gentle ambience. Due to their size, the lights are assembled on-site, which means there is always a sense of surprise and delight as clients see them finished for the first time.⠀
It is always a pleasure to design something personally knowing the end user, and how much enjoyment it brings to someone’s life.⠀

When the architecture and interior design of a house are done in conjunction with the one another, a harmony between the two disciplines informs the design to create a new dynamic expression.⠀
As part of our interior design offering, we will often design individual pieces of furniture that fill a particular need which is not available in the market place, or that may need to be a specific size or material. Today’s post shows the Elm Slab Table that we had specially made for the St Vincents Place Residence in Albert Park. The decision was made not to purchase a brand name piece of furniture to avoid any preconceived associations to the space. ⠀
The house is a series of experiences based around a collection of objects that each have a relationship with each other. ⠀
The slabs of Elm for the 3.5-metre table were sourced from Rob Scott who specialises in rare tree salvage. The large pieces still had bark on their outer edges which was carefully removed and then polished until smooth while retaining the natural texture. The slabs were milled and joined with bronze butterfly wedges, while the ends were cut roughly with a chain saw and burnt. The timber was wire brushed and then bleached white before being stained with a series of subtle colours to give it the beautiful finish courtesy of Ray Wolf at Hawthorn Furniture Polishers who does all of our polishing work.⠀
The table is part of the tapestry of the house's collection of beautiful objects. It is the highly skilled trades we work with that make these items a reality.⠀

Andrew Piva is one of three Directors who leads the team at B.E Architecture. Andrew has been with the firm for over 17 years, and in that time has made himself a cornerstone of our organisation.
Andrew has very strong ties to his Italian heritage, as he was born and raised in the Italian community of Griffith in New South Wales. These cultural ties are an important aspect of his day to day outlook on life. He is a mentor to our staff and his calm, patient demeanour is always welcome in the day to day hustle and bustle of our busy studio. He often represents the firm at industry events and panel discussions, is a passionate advocate of the work we do, and a significant contributor to the office design ethos.

The concept of an onsen with communal bathing and steam room, was thought to be the perfect accompaniment to the underground lap-pool and gymnasium at the St Vincents Place Residence in Albert Park.⠀
The interior was fitted with the same granite used throughout the project, including the custom-made concave stone tiles that were specially developed for the project in collaboration with @ecooutdoor . The idea of the onsen is to bathe in a comfortable seated position, before using the pool or steam room.⠀

Inside the Rose Street Residence, the original timber staircase (complete with turned timber posts and landings) was replaced with a new free-flowing curved stair. The staircase was constructed in timber with a solid handrail and finished in a French polish. The lightweight construction methodology required the time-honoured technique of 'lathe and plaster', where hundreds of tiny slats of timber under the stair's structure were bent to the desired form, fixed, and then plastered to create the smooth finish pictured above.⠀
While not belonging authentically to the original period detailing of the building, the stair feels as if it has always been there. The handmade quality of the construction is something associated with these early period buildings.⠀

Our post today features the stone cladding used for the Armadale Residence in Melbourne. Solid blocks of granite were chosen for the structure's facade, rather than a tile adhered to a masonry substrate. The surface of the granite was split instead of being cut to create a soft, uneven texture exposing the quartz, which in certain light gives an almost ethereal lightness to the 260 tonnes of stone. The solid slabs of stone were supplied to us by Simon Leslie from Granite Works, which were used for the facade, viewing platform over the pool, and also light-fittings built into the walls. The stonemasons from Stone Elegance worked on the façade for over a year under the watchful eye of Len Bogarten's team at LBA Construction. Projects such as this one are only possible with complete support from our clients and the highly skilled suppliers and contractors who are involved.

Today is a slide show featuring our studio's practice of producing simple scale models to test our projects within the office and enable us to discuss the ideas with our clients at an early stage. In a limited palette, these basic models can often illustrate design challenges better than full colour, photo-realistic renders where the overall significance of an idea can be hidden in the details.

The Tivoli Road Residence began with a discussion of the ‘beauty of ugliness’ or in other words, the concept of unconventional beauty; the fascinating idea that something can be attractive and unattractive at the same time. In art, it is often works that challenge the viewer that are remembered and give a greater sense of satisfaction when they start to be understood and appreciated. Sometimes the stimulation of having to think about something is more satisfying than the soothing sedative effect of the obviously beautiful.
With this concept in mind, we approached the design for the narrow corner site on Tivoli Road in South Yarra, Melbourne. The lightning-bolt like structure reads as a windowless monolith, although full of light inside. There is an apparent awkwardness imbued in the three-storey form which is sustained by a series of details and materials that make the building more palatable. The façade was divided into a series of vertical bands made up of nine different sizes of solid bluestone blocks. The blocks varied in their depth and thickness to catch the sun and temper the awkward structure. The result is a controlled tension that is not allowed to overpower the ultimate perception of the form. Bluestone was used for the cladding as it has a strong reference to the historic precinct that the site sits within, and has quiet and solemn characteristics that the form needed. While we would not say the result is beautiful, we would suggest it is purposeful and will stand the test of time and remain a valued facade amongst the neighbouring terrace houses.
