A detail of what must be one of the most magnificent fonts in the country. The Tournai font of Winchester cathedral, made in the area that is now Belgium during the Twelfth Century. It is decorated with scenes from the life of St Nicholas alongside images of animals, such as the hawk pictured here. The font is made of a deep black carboniferous limestone that has the polishing qualities of marble, and it is truly a marvel. #tournaimarble #tournaifont #winchestercathedral #norman #romanesqueart #medievalart #ancient

Old moneybags: detail from the south face of the font at #winchestercathedral showing #stnicholas #bishopofmyra handing a bag of gold to the kneeling father, who is in turn passing on the gifts to his three daughters (only one of whom is shown in this photograph). The story goes that an impoverished nobleman had three daughters but because he could not provide them with dowries, they would have to go on #thegame. They were saved from this fate by the saint's secret gifts of three bags of gold, which he either threw through the window or lobbed down the chimney of the nobleman's house - hence the saint's identification with Santa Claus. The three bags of gold were adopted as the traditional sign of pawnbrokers, of whom, along with children and sailors, St Nicholas is the patron saint #santaclauscamefromturkey #tournaifont #tournaimarble #fontquest #oldmoneybags

The marble font was carved by sculptors in Tournai, Flanders in c.1150 and was transported 500 miles by river and sea and finally overland to East Meon, Hampshire. It was the gift of the Bishop of Winchester, Henry of Blois, who was the Conqueror's grandson.
